I grew up in the north of England. My family loved music, and I began singing quite early on. Like a typical teenager, I used to lock myself in my room for weeks listening to my favourite records and singing along to them. Kate Bush was my great favourite, later to be joined by Billie Holiday and Joni Mitchell. There were quite a few musicians in my circle of friends and I was fortunate enough to be introduced to some pretty well-known people. Although I always wanted to go on stage, as I loved acting, my first job was working with natural medicines. I was 24 years old by the time I started singing background vocals with a band. The musicians, happily, accepted me right away and that was what prompted me to take it further. I took voice lessons and gathered as much live experience as I could. It was never my ambition to be a pop star, it was always about the singing and songwriting. Some people told me you have to record a studio album before you can find musicians to work with you, but that didn’t feel right to me. I did eventually find some wonderful musicians and for the last few years we’ve been working on my songs together and developing our sound.
